Behind the Veil in Afghanistan
A quick note to point readers to the Toronto Globe & Mail's website, where a week-long feature, entitled "Behind the Veil" examines the plight of women in Kandahar, Afghanistan. It is, so far, a very interesting and provocative series, based primarily on interviews conducted by a local female videographer, the questions created by Globe reporters, with a group of local women in Kandahar city, including civil servants, child brides, and women's rights activists. The series includes interviews, stories, and a multimedia section.
Kandahar province, of course, is a predominately Pashtun region, and is the spiritual home of the Taleban. It is also where the Canadian military is engaged, fighting the insurgency.
I strongly encourage anyone with an interest in Afghanistan, the fight against extremism, and/or women's rights to take a look at this series.
